Special Prayers

The Passchendaele Prayer

Faithful God, compassionate and merciful,
Hear us as we remember those valiant hearts
Who fell in the heat of the conflict,
And died here in the mire and clay of the trenches.
We honour the examples of selfless service,
Of comradeship and care, that shine out of the loss and waste.
We remember the proud and sorrowing lands
From which they came;
Those who returned wounded in mind and body;
All at home who mourned the dead,
And all here who suffered the loss of home and community.
Guide the nations, united today in sorrow,
Into the light of freedom, contentment and glorious hope,
And hear the longing of our hearts for peace;
We ask this for the sake of your world
And the good of all your children;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A prayer for Manchester

God of compassion,
you hear the cries of all who are in trouble or distress;
accept our prayers for those whose lives are affected by the bombing in Manchester;
We pray especially for those suddenly facing a future without a child, parent or loved one,
young ones who are in deep distress
those who are injured, traumatised or awaiting news
strengthen them in their hour of need,
grant them perseverance and courage to face the future
and be to them a firm foundation on which to build their lives;
this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Give thanks for the Queen and pray for the UK leaders
(CMS prayer)

We give thanks for Queen Elizabeth II and her strong Christian faith. On 9th September 2015 she became Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, passing the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. By then she had reigned for 63 years and seven months, 23,226 days.
In her own words: “To many of us, our beliefs are of fundamental importance. For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life.”
Pray also for the leaders of the United Kingdom, that they may be given wisdom and discernment for the responsibilities of office and the difficulties of decision-making.

Prayer for Refugees fleeing conflict in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
(From USPG)

Lord God of wilderness, wave and wind,
you travel with the wanderers of the world.
Stay close, we pray, to all who live
with loss, in terror, and adrift,
and spur us on to build a world
where there is truly room for all.

Lord Jesus, you came among us
homeless, and as a refugee.
Shake our complacency,
rekindle our compassion,
and help us challenge our leaders
to forge a common strategy
that is both truly just, and fair.
